Your product description is one of the most powerful pieces of writing for your business because it offers the opportunity to explain what you have to offer and why we can’t live without it. 

One of the biggest mistakes people make when writing a product description is merely explaining the product with no emotional appeal or flair. Sure, you need to say what the product does, but you also have the opportunity to connect and engage with a potential lifelong customer.

1. Write Product Descriptions for Your Defined Audience

Before you start writing your product description, you will need to define your audience and ideal buyer. Think about what type of person would want to buy your product. How do they speak? Are they funny or serious? What is the problem they’re looking to solve? Casting a broad audience net can actually hurt you in the long run, so make sure to tailor your product description to the specific person who will identify with your brand and become a lifelong fan.  

2. Embody Your Brand Voice in Your Product Descriptions 

Chances are some other company is probably selling a very similar product to you. So, how do you stand out online and on store shelves? You need to channel your brand voice and convey your product message in a unique way that makes it shine. Don’t be afraid to use your voice. While not everyone may like the tone and theme of your brand, your ideal customer will.    

3. Hook Readers with Words That Spark Imagination

Since your potential customer hasn’t used your product before, you have to use words that spark the imagination. Try adding elegant descriptors, including words that convey feeling and emotion, and telling a story in the product description. The more vivid and personal your description is, the better! Some great words to use are luxurious, effortless, amazing, or powerful. While these words are simple, they get to the point and easily communicate your message. 

4. Call Out the Product Benefits in Your Description 

Don’t forget to directly call out the benefits of your product in the description! Business owners sometimes get wrapped up in the details or logistics of their product and forget to include the benefit to the customer. Why? As the seller, you probably think the benefit is obvious. Don’t assume your potential customer knows how your product will improve their life. Bullet points are also a great way to get this information across clearly and directly.  

5. Invite Customers to Purchase or Learn More 

Give your potential buyer a little nudge to make a move. Sometimes simply asking a customer to buy, try, or learn more is enough to get them to act. Make sure to include a call to action on your product web page, especially if you have a limited time sale, a trial offer, or a promotion like free shipping.
