Blogging Tips for Interior Designers

Start Getting Discovered Online with These 5 Easy Interior Design Blog Ideas

As an interior designer, you know that beautiful images are key for showing off your work, building your portfolio, and sparking the imagination of potential clients. However, photos are not enough to get your interior design firm discovered online. Interior design blogging is the key to building SEO into your website, establishing credibility, showing off your expertise, and getting discovered by new clients.

You may be asking, “why can’t I just use social media to gain new clients?” Here’s the thing, social media is great for bringing awareness to your interior design firm, but it comes with some drawbacks.

Why Social Media isn’t Enough to Market Your Interior Design Firm

  1. Social media has a sustainability problem.

To be successful, you have to post daily content and engage with new users for up to one hour after posting. That one “quick” post ends up taking hours to execute.

  2. The lifespan of a social media post is 24 hours max.

This means that after one day, your post is dead and probably won’t be seen again.

  3. Social media users are passive.

They’re killing time. While they may love your images, they may not be ready to purchase your service.

  4. You don’t own your Instagram!

Instagram is a rented space that could lose popularity or be deleted tomorrow by the owner (aka Mark Zuckerberg). Bye-bye, followers.

Why Interior Design Blogging Will Get Your Design Business Discovered

  1. Blogging is sustainable and works for you, 24/7.

It may take two or three hours to write a blog post. But if you do it right, it will attract new leads to your site while you sleep.

  2. Blogs get more powerful as they get older.

Unlike social media, your blog post won’t expire. It will actually gain more traction as it ages and help get you to the top of the Google results.

  3. People are actively searching Google for design blogs and resources.

Unlike social media, people go to Google because they’re interested in solving a problem. This means they are strong leads who are interested in your service.

  4. You own your blog!

Your website is the online home of your business. Invest in it.

Now you’re probably here because you’re interested in investing in your interior design blog. However, you have no idea where to start or how to write one. As a professional interior design writer and blogger, I have helped designers across the country start their interior design blogs and get noticed online. Here are some of my essential interior design blogging tips that are a must if you want to get your blog seen on the first page of Google.

Blogging Tips for Interior Designers That Other Writers Won’t Share

#1 Use Headlines for the Skimmers and Include Details for the Researchers

There are two types of people in the world, headline skimmers and deep dive researchers. Your interior design blogs will need to appeal to both. Write for the mom on the go looking for quick fixes and the DIY expert who needs some additional help. Make sure to use a combination of headings, bulleted lists, and details to show off your knowledge.

#2 Consistency is Key

There is one consistent reader of every blog you publish – Google. Don’t upset Google by skipping a week and not sticking to your monthly blog schedule. This will upset the web crawlers, and your site won’t get as much traction. Besides, the blogging fans you grow will come to expect your content to be released on a regular schedule. Think about how you would feel if your favorite TV show just stopped making episodes in the middle of a season. Make sure to design a content calendar and blog schedule you can stick to. Ideally, you will post a blog weekly. However, twice a month is also a good frequency to work with.

#3 Pick a Keyword and Stick to It

Ok, so you may be thinking, “what is a keyword, anyway?” While a keyword is a technical SEO term, it basically just refers to your blog topic. When blogging, it’s best to go in with a strategy. Sit down with one topic in mind and stick to that topic throughout the blog post. This is a good strategy for a few reasons.

First, Google web crawlers will better understand your content and recommend it to people who are searching.

Second, people want targeted search results for their chosen topic. If you search for “tips to decorate a home office,” you would be upset if the blog you clicked on suddenly starts talking about bathrooms.

Third, going to the page with a specific topic in mind will make the writing process more manageable.

Ok, now that you have some know-how going into it, here are my 5 easy interior design blog ideas to get you started. (Hint: these topics are the starting point for your keywords!)
